The poinsettia plant originated in Central America but was brought to the United States by Joel Roberts Poinsett. As the first US Ambassador to Mexico (1825-1829) he maintained his own hothouses in Greenville, South Carolina and sent the "Euphorbia pulcherrima" plants to other friends and botanical gardens.
Mexicans who had converted to Christianity were the first to celebrate the plant's Christian meaning: the red leaves and star shaped foliage pattern represent Christ's birth, red leaves the blood He shed on the cross, and white leaves represent His purity.
